Job Opening: Coalition Organizer

The Alliance seeks a qualified candidate to fill the position of coalition organizer.

The Alliance supports grassroots organizing for racial, economic, and environmental justice in Twin Cities economic growth and land development decisions. We lead coalition organizing campaigns that connect the issues of affordable housing, transportation, racial justice, health equity, environmental justice, and economic opportunity. We are an organizing support system for our member and allied organizations, increasing the capacity and grassroots power within and across organizations and communities working for more equitable and sustainable development patterns.

The Alliance has a deep commitment to racial justice. The work involves centering and elevating the voices and perspectives of people of color. People of color are strongly encouraged to apply.

Position Summary: 

Support grassroots, community-driven coalitions in issue campaigns that build long-term power and achieve short-term victories. The position also provides educational resources and tools that support and advance organizing activities within the equitable development field more broadly.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Build support for a broader justice movement that recognizes the interdependence of people, policies, and land-use decisions.
  • Organize and support coalitions made up of the Alliance’s member organizations, and allied partner groups, in specific campaigns.
  • Help develop organizing plans and support grassroots networks in executing them.
  • Deepen existing organizing work in communities of color through supportive issue-organizing and building relationships of trust.
  • Support community coalitions as they work directly with the public sector and help create the conditions for low-wealth communities and communities of color to shape local and regional decision-making.
  • Promote best practices and learning opportunities from local and national organizing and equitable development fields via presentations, special reports, etc.
  • Utilize technology and other tools to strengthen coalitional networks and relationships.
  • Contribute to staff team projects, working collaboratively to advance the Alliance’s goals and vision.

Desired Experience and Qualifications:

  • 3 or more years of grassroots organizing experience and success with issue campaigns.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work well as a team member and to coordinate/assist diverse groups of people.
  • Demonstrated capacity to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks.
  • Excellent personal accountability, self-motivation, and follow through skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment and passion for environmental, racial, and economic justice.
  • Skillful in discerning and navigating power dynamics.
  • Knowledge of various advocacy and organizing approaches, the public policy-making process, and equitable development issues.
