June 21, 2018: Density in Twin Cities Suburbs

This article from CityLab highlights the housing crisis in Twin Cities suburbs, where available housing does not meet the needs of every community member. Arguments about how to improve access to affordable housing ignite anxieties about race and poverty as well as debates about density and “neighborhood character.” Nelima Sitati-Munene, Alliance board member and executive director of African Career, Education & Resource, Inc., has been working with the Suburban Hennepin Housing Coalition to push municipal leaders to no longer “view the landlord as the only stakeholder” in their cities. She says working-class suburbs like Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center need much more subsidized housing construction, not less.
