The Alliance was a member of the Stops For Us coalition, which secured three additional stops on the Green Line LRT to serve low-wealth communities of color. The added stops connect some of the Twin Cities’ most diverse neighborhoods to the economic benefits of the train.
This victory took years of organizing and advocacy at the local, regional and federal levels. We overcame significant resistance from local stakeholders who wanted the LRT line to be as fast and inexpensive as possible. But our analysis revealed that those priorities favored station construction in whiter, wealthier neighborhoods.
Ultimately, we secured a federal policy change that paved the way for construction of all three missing stops at the intersections of University Avenue and Victoria, Hamline and Western in St. Paul. The Stops for Us coalition was presented with an Environmental Justice Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2010.
