We Stand with Somali and Immigrant Communities!

“Stay strong, keep your heads high, and do not be shaken by hateful or bigoted narratives. Our resilience speaks louder than their prejudice.” –Asad Khalif Aliweyd, Executive Director of the New American Development Center, a member of the Alliance.

At The Alliance, we have the honor and privilege of organizing with Somali community leaders and immigrants from across the globe who have chosen to make Minnesota home. We condemn the hateful rhetoric targeting Somali Minnesotans and the ongoing state-sanctioned violence against immigrants, refugees, and U.S. citizens targeted by ICE.

At a recent press conference, Somali leaders urged Minnesotans to speak out, show up, learn about Somali history and culture, check in on friends and neighbors, and support local businesses. They called on community organizations to step up:

“We need long term commitment. We need organizations to come up with bold initiatives to support Somali communities and all immigrant communities. It’s time to hear from our neighbors, friends, and colleagues,” said Jaylani Hussein, Executive Director at CAIR MN.

Three ways to show up:

Share a meal: Ayada Leads is organizing a Community Halal Food Drive to help get food to folks unable to leave home.

Get connected: Local organizers and elected officials have launched Defend612, which helps people sign up to get involved in hyperlocal support networks– from rides and grocery runs, to volunteer ICE-watch shifts in your neighborhood.

Know your rights: Get trained as a legal observer, call the Monarca Rapid Reponse Hotline to report ICE activity: 612-441-2881, print these resources to exercise your rights at work and at home.
