EPA: Building the capacity of those at the forefront of change

Bringing community voices to the forefront of the planning process is vital when developing public infrastructure. In 2011, the Metropolitan Council received a sizable grant intended to support a local initiative called the Corridors of Opportunity. Part of the grant was intended to support a community engagement initiative. The Alliance for Metropolitan Stability, the Minnesota Center for Neighborhood Organizing, and the Nexus Community Partners came together to create a landmark coalition focused on establishing regional standards for community engagement. This effort energized local communities and resulted in a Public Engagement Plan, standardizing community engagement protocols.
